University of Utah Engineering Students to Work with
SCCA World Challenge Teams at Miller Motorsports Park
Formula SAE team members to get real-world, hands-on experience
TOOELE VALLEY, UTAH (September 30, 2010) — There will be some eager, but unfamiliar, faces in the paddock when the SCCA Pro Racing World Challenge Championship comes to Miller Motorsports Park for this weekend’s Sports Car Wars presented by the Viper Club of America.
Ten engineering students from the University of Utah are participating in the SCCA World Challenge Sports Car Wars Cadets Program, a hands-on engineering mentorship. Each student will be paired with one of the World Challenge teams to watch, learn and participate. The World Challenge race, which will be the series’ 2010 season finale, will take place on Sunday afternoon at 2:55 p.m.
The goal of the program is to give future engineers an inside look at the tasks, duties and lifestyle of their future occupation, to make valuable contacts and to provide a glimpse inside the life of a motorsports team.
The 10 visiting students are part of the University of Utah’s Formula SAE program. Formula SAE is a program sponsored by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) and is considered by many to be the pinnacle of student engineering. Each participating college team is given the task to design build, and test a small open-wheeled race car (similar to a small Indy car). Each year a competition is held among the participating college Formula SAE teams from all over the world to determine an overall champion. This year’s event will be held in Fontana, Calif.
“We started the Cadets program earlier this season at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course,” said Jason Dukes, coordinator of the SCCA World Challenge Sports Car Wars Cadets program. “The program was so successful that we decided to bring it to other tracks. Thankfully, we were able to partner with the Formula SAE team from the University of Utah for this event. Miller Motorsports Park is a great facility and the University of Utah’s Formula SAE team is very highly regarded, so we are happy that the Cadets program can assist in supporting their program.”
“At the University of Utah, we have been blessed to partner with Miller Motorsports Park,” said Scott Brown, project manager for the University of Utah Formula SAE team. “The ability to develop as engineers is aided by the support of local industry. MMP has given us great opportunities, such as SCCA Pro Racing World Challenge Sports Car Wars Cadets program. This Cadets program is allowing us as engineers to gain real-world experience in the racing industry. For some of our team members this will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience. We look forward to the relationship that we are building with MMP.”
Guests attending the SCCA World Challenge “Sports Car Wars” presented by the Viper Club of America will enter the facility through the North gate, and tickets will be priced at $6 per day. Kids 12 and under are admitted free of charge. Fans who visit MMP’s Facebook page and “like” MMP will receive four free tickets to the event upon presentation of a photo ID.
Also taking place at Miller Motorsports Park on Friday and Saturday this weekend will be the Tera-Flex Grand National Championship event for the World Extreme Rock Crawling Championship (W.E.ROCK), which will be held on MMP’s seven-acre rock-crawling facility. The best W.E.ROCK teams from the Eastern and Western divisions will meet to compete for national championship trophies.
Guests attending the W.E.ROCK event will enter the facility through the South Gate, and tickets are priced at $15 per day or $25 for the weekend. Kids 12 and under are admitted free of charge.
